Does your AR-15 have a 16" barrel? If so, your description makes me believe the extractor is prematurely releasing its grip on the case rim. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYm5UjojDMU
There are two fixes for that issue. First is to install a small o-ring around the extractor spring to help the spring keep the extractor hooked on the rim. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Extractor-Spring-Uprade-Kit-p/bcm%20extractor%20spring%20upgrade.htm
Another aid to extraction is to replace the standard buffer with a heavy buffer to slow down the extraction process by a fraction of a second. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/H-Carbine-Buffer-p/buffer%20carbine%20h.htm

I have run into this issue many times. It is likely not the mag, but go ahead and eliminate by trying different mags. Also fire some different ammo. Next, check that your gas tube is not obstructed, and then check your your gas block alignment. If those pass, swap out your buffer and buffer spring. Finally, if all else fails to yield results, check your headspacing. If you do not have gauges, you will need a qualified gunsmith.
FYI, I have also seen gas tube length issues, but only on 308's.
