I’m looking for information regarding Magpul stocks and DPMS’s LR-308s. I’m aware that Armalite’s AR-10s have longer buffer tubes than AR-15s, and while stocks made for AR-15s can fit on Armalite’s AR-10s there will be about half an inch of buffer tube sticking out of the rear of the AR-15 stock. I had an FFL holder order me a DPMS 308 Recon (http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-RECON_ep_93-1.html) (not here yet :( ), which comes with what appears to be a standard Magpul MOE butt stock.

My questions are:
1. How long are DPMS LR-308 buffer tubes in comparison to AR-15 and Armalite’s AR-10 buffer tubes?
2. Is the (what appears to be a normal) Magpul MOE stock on the 308 Recon likely to have any extra buffer tube stick out of the rear of the MOE stock when fully collapsed?

I'd suggest you get in touch with DPMS and Magpul customer service.

I have no experience with DPMS but quite a bit with (LaRue Tactical who I buy Magpul from).

LaRue's customer service is excellent.

Start by reading this FAQ.

From the FAQ.

CAR Extension measurements:

Brand,type/length/diameter

OLD Factory Armalite AR10 extension: 8" External, 7 3/4" internal, commercial diameter 1.171"
NEW '07 Factory Armalite AR10 extension 8" external, 7 3/4"" internal, MIL spec diameter 1.145"
VLTOR AR 15 extension : 7 1/4" external, 7"internal, mil diameter 1.145"
Magpul 93B extension: 7 1/2" external, 7" internal, diameter doesn't matter
AR15 commercial extension: 8" external, 7" internal commercial diameter 1.171"
AR15 commercial extension 7 3/4" external, 7" internal, commercial diameter 1.171"

As you can see many of the AR15 tubes have different external lengths but they all have 7" internal lengths.

You can use commercial diameter AR15 stocks on the pre-07 factory Armalite CAR tubes but they won't collapse all the way, if they do, you will have the extension in your shoulder since its 1" longer than a AR15 buffer tube. The Armalite factory AR10 CAR stock will work on commercial AR15 tubes. AR15 mil spec stocks will work on the new AR10 buffer tubes but again they might not collapse or collapse too far.

DPMS uses a AR15 RE with a shorter buffer.
ArmaLite uses a .750 longer (internal) RE.

The 7.62 BCG is a half inch longer than the 5.56 BCG. You either need a longer RE or a shorter buffer.

With A2 stocks both (AR15-AR10) are the same RE but a different length buffer.
