View Full Version : Suggest: 1-4X scope/mount and BUIS for M4
September 17, 2012, 11:59 AM
Fixed front post, 16" barrel, flat top.
Decided I'd like a 1-4X scope/mount and a back up iron sight for an M4.
I see a lot of good options out there.
Burris, Leupold, Millet, Nikon, not sure where to begin.
I want it to be a true 1X on the low end, illumination would be nice but not an absolute necessity.
I also don't know how far out I should mount it on the rail.
For the scope/mount/BUIS, I'm looking for good quality at a reasonable price. I don't need the best but don't want junk.

I had a Trijicon TR24 in a Larue 1.93 tall mount and Troy rear BUIS.
It was kind of heavy, and I didn't like the triangle reticle at all.
Very good glass and very forgiving eye relief on 1x.
Illumination was very good during daylight hours, terrible at night.
A Matech BUIS that comes standard on a Colt 6940 will not fit under the occular lens and still allow you to open/close the light aperture for the fiber optics.
I have been eyeing the Leupold Patrol Rifle optic with fire dot. I much prefer the reticle but I haven't seen one in person to see how much heavier it is than my current setup.
ETA: Oops, scratch the Leupold it isn't a 1x.
I also like the Super Sniper:
I haven't tried it myself but the reticle is a little busy, but good and a lot of people more knowledgeable than myself like and use them.

You may have seen the pic in my response to your other AR question. I would recommend a LaRue mount. I have pulled mine off several times and it is always within a half inch of POA when remounted. It also lifts the scope high enough to clear rear BUIS if your scope requires shorter eye relief.
I went with the Leupold 1.5x5x scope only because I already had it. At 1.5x it is so close to 1x that you could use it in a close target engagement without worry (both eyes open).
Again, hope the pictures help.

I have a Leopoid VX-6 1-6x on my LWRC. It's really nice, no issues. That said I shot a friend Viper PST 1-4 and while its not as nice as my VX-6, its dam close. If I were to do it again I would choose the PST

Vortex Viper PST 1-4 X 24, mounted in a Larue LT-104 mount. Midwest industries SPLP front and rear folding sights.
I love this combo! Very versatile.

Some of you all have some good taste, but I'm not looking to spend a bunch.

The SWFA SS 1-4x is very good. It's very capable of first shot hits to at least 300 yards (I only took it to 300).
Leupold has their VX-6 Multigun Riflescope 1-6x for $949.
I liked the Leupold VX-III 1.5x-5x with circle dot reticle. I had no trouble hitting steel at 300 with a 100 yard zero. My issue was the 1.5x slowed me down at 20 yards or closer.

I do like my Burris 1-4x24 Extreme Tactical, that comes with a Burris 30mm P.E.B.R. mount and a Burris FastFire Red Dot sight on top, mounted on my 5.39x45 Smith & Wesson upper; though the turrent clicks are a bit mushy.
I do like the Leupold 1-6X Tactical...so much that I'm seriously considering buying one; though I think I have to buy a mount for it --- whereas --- the Burris XTR comes with the mount & rings.
