A short time back Ruger sent me a request for suggestions. My number one suggestion was to bring out the Ruger SR 556 in 308. I remember years ago they were talking about bringing out a Mini-14 in 308, but dropped it. People were excited about that. So bring out the SR in 308 and price it no more than a DSA Fn. I'd buy one.

Thoughts?

Odds are that some Ruger version of an AR-10 wouldn't cost any less...

How exactly would a Mini-14 in .308 work?

It would probably lose it's 'handy carbine' appeal in the transition.

It didn't.

They tried to make a beefed up Mini in 308. They called it the XGI model. They made a few prototyps and even listed it in their catalog, but they never could get it to work successfully and dropped the project. I don't think any were ever actually sold, but it is possible a few working prototypes made it into someones hands.

Very true, their AR-15 clone isn't cheap though I believe they were fearful of releasing a sub $1000 AR since it would cannibalize the Mini-14. It made more sense to keep them out of the same price range, therefore you can do much better than Ruger if buying an AR. (BTW, I'm not anti-Ruger, I have three Ruger handguns.)

I expect an AR-10 clone from Ruger would be expensive compared to ArmaLite or DPMS.

If you have Ruger's ear, tell them I would like to see a pistol that accepts the 10/22 rotary magazine.

I don't recon I have their ear really, I'm just on a survey list.

They do make a pistol that takes the rotary mag:

Never cared much for ARs, being a Mini-14 fan. But, if Ruger ever offers their .308 Gunsite Scout in a stainless finish...I'm in for some long nights sleeping on the couch.

Wouldn't we call that an M1A, and buy it from Springfield?

More on the lines of an M1A scout, but really a scout lite

If you have their attention even momentarily, suggest a 7-1/2" Redhawk in 357/44 Bains-Davis.

The SR556 is not far off DSA FAL prices. Me thinks a .308 version would be too spendy to compete.:(

I don't think it's such a leap really. Keeping it at under $1700 shouldn't be too hard. Of course it will be more expensive just based on the fact that 223's will out sell it 3/1 or better. Of course Ruger could really own that niche in the market.
