IMO it's a better platform and the availability of bits and pieces for it is unbelievable. You can get mags dirt cheap and mod or upgrade it to your heart's desire.

No real comparison in my estimation. 10-22 hands down based on options and aftermarket support(if you're into that sort of thing). I'm down to 3 10-22 rifles after equipping all the kids with shooters. I have one older model as a beater, one newer model that I'm getting broken in(only 4 years old), and an older rifle converted to 17HM2. If I find a decent buy sometime, I'll add another middle aged rifle to put a folding stock on since it makes such a good ATV carry option.

If you are customizing, then 10-22 but if you want better accuracy out of the box then 597.

The only reason to consider 597 is for .22 mag. Now if Ruger brought back .22 mag. version then no reason to consider 597 at all. 597 not a bad choice, but 10-22 is a great choice.

I have both. My 10/22 turned into a 300 dollar gun quick with all the upgrades available. My 597 stayed factory. Both shoot just as well as each other. I personally find the 10/22 easier to clean and the mag selection a plus. But they both shoot as well as I do.

10-22 for the mods. But if I wanted accuracy out of the box, I'd buy a Marlin 60 or 795 (the magged version).

I was going trade off the 597 and then buy a 10-22.

I think maybe i will keep the 597 and buy the 10-22 also.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT

That's a good idea. I improved the 10 22 by glass bedding the barrel channel and the receiver. If you get one I suggest you do the same. You won't be sorry.

I would pick the 10-22 but if you put the Marlin 60 in the mix,I would pick the Marlin 60. I have 2 of the 10-22 and they now collect dust. I like the slim profile of the 60 when I carry it and the accuracy is legendary. What ever you do, shoulder all your choices and you will decide which fits best for U.:)Cliff

If you want a cool gun to upgrade thats superior in accuracy go with the ruger. If you just want a beater gun that works most of the time with average accuracy at best the remington is your gun.

I'd suggest you try them both, weigh the pros and cons and then decide which is best for "you". ..... ;)

I was in the same boat about 3 years ago and I ended up going with the 597 due to availability issues in my area. Maybe I got a lemon but my 597 has always been VERY picky about ammo. All of the bulk stuff I've tried (WWB, Winchester High-Velocity, some random stuff from the LGS, etc.) has had major failure to eject issues. I get a stovepipe jam every 2-3 rounds without fail.

If I use CCI Stingers it runs and runs but I bought it with the goal of cheap plinking and a box of CCI is only a dollar or two less than a box of 9mm in my area. I've tried various magazines and even had my gunsmith buddy fiddle with it and I just can't get the thing to like any ammo besides the CCI. YMMV. Best of luck with your purchase but I say go with the 10/22.

My 10 22 seems to use just about everything I feed it. It even cycles subsonic stuff. I get the best groups with CCI though.
