So, I've seen a couple of .308 drums out there for Fals, HK/PTR-91's and AR-10 type rifles. The XS drum claims to hold 50 rounds and function well even in full-auto. I also see that betamag has a 100 round .308 drum. The XS drum is aluminum and seems to be pretty well constructed. I'm not too sure about a 100 round plastic betamag.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these drums? Are there any other .308 type drums out there currently?

Granted, I'm sure there will be some comments about "what do you need that for", not practical, etc. That's ok, 1/2 the gun stuff I own isn't practical, but that never stops me. I just really want to know about quality, durability, and reliability. My Izzy HB semi-auto FAL is already impractical - the way I see it, shoving a 50-100 round drum under it will only make it more, not less, practical!

I think sr420 has a drum in just about every flavor. Im sure he can comment on what he thinks of them.

+1

SR420 is someone you want to talk to about gadgets and gizmos for the M14/M1A platform. Guy knows his stuff.

Thank you DLiller & FrosSsT!

Skans, I use the 50 round X-14 drum mag in my M14s and it is all that and a bag of chips.
Easy to load and I have not experienced and problems, but you should know that the bolt
will close on an empty drum, you will see this in the video linked below - not a problem though.

I researched the Beta Mag and kept getting reports that they jammed and jammed often so I avoided them.

I have no doubt that drum mags for other platforms from Xs-Products are equally awesome...
I am waiting on their .223 X-15 to arrive so that I can try it out in my Daewoo.

My 'other' high capacity mags are 7.62x39 AK47 Chinese 75 and 100 round drums. They are excellent.

Contact James Malarkey (james@xs-products.com) over at Xs-Products with questions and tell him H2O MAN sent you.

I'll keep watching to see if anybody has one of those drums, or if you ever get one I'd sure like to hear a range report.;)

Sheesh, a fully loaded 50 rounder is going to make one of these bad boys a real tub!:D

Hmmmmm, I'm wondering if you can get the HK21 parts to convert a 91 to belt fed? Belt fed is better than drum IMO.

That's got to get heavy!

Belts take more time and effort to change than a drum.

I have heard good things about the xs drums. I've never used one though.

I'm a much bigger fan of drums than belts, especially in 7.62x39 and 5.56. The jury's still out on .308, and that's why I'm asking. Thanks SR420 for your input and advice!

I really like the idea of 50 round drums in .308 that work well. I doubt I'd want anything bigger than 50 rounds in .308 - probably a better idea to have 2 50 round drums than 1 100 round drum.

I to have been interested in one of these Xs-mags but am concerned about the weight and dont know what platform I would get one in M1A or FAL. I think I would lean more towards the FAL because I have my M1A set up with a scout scope. Plus the FAL has a shorted barrel 18".

You are welcome and I agree with you about 2 50 rounders instead of a single 100 round drum.

The Xs-Products drum is a great accessory and the X-14 compliments my 20 and 25 round mags very well.
