What is the best way to change the grip on an AR? Weapon upside down or right side up, Reason I ask is the selector spring and detent, and am looking for an easy way to do it without losing either.

If I can recall correctly, I changed mine laying the gun on its side/right side up. Just be careful and you shouldnt lose anything.

The spring isn't highly tensioned. Just remove as Smit described and you'll be fine.
Oh... throw a big white bath towel on the table first... prevents small widgets from flying into the 4th dimension. ;)

upside down works well. The spring usually stays in the grip.

Right side up, and the detent can fall out (and maybe not be noticed falling out).

On its side works too, but if you tilt it, the detent can slide out (see above):)

I do mine upside down, it seems to retain the spring really well that way, and also gives better visibility on the screw. and let off on the pistol grip REEEEEAAAAALLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY Slowly or you'll never find the detent spring.
