They say the only dumb question is the one you don't ask so here goes:

I am converting my mil-spec carbine to a 12" free float hand guard. Since the front sight will be moving several inches forward, is there anything else I should know/learn/change? Or I am just over thinking things, again.

Nope... other than by increasing sight radius, you may find it takes slightly longer to align your sights... but, you may also find that you shoot more accurately.

Is the gas port moving forward ;)

When you say "mil-spec carbine" I'm assuming you mean a fixed front sight base which not only positions the front sight, it also aligns with the gas port in the barrel.

When you say "the front sight will be moving several inches forward" I believe you need a different barrel (with the gas port positioned further forward to accommodate the new location of a fixed front sight)

As always, I could be wrong.

I'm guessing he's getting a low-pro gas block and mounting a MBUS type front sight on the hand guard rail... above and a few inches ahead of the gas block. Not a tremendous amount, but it may make a small difference in quality of sight alignment.

Yes, the mil spec carbine I mentioned is... mil spec.

I am removing the FSB, putting the 12" hand guard over a low profile gas block, and installing an MBUS on the end.

It well resemble this carbine gas barrel.

Another option is the use a clamp on front sight post in front of the hand guard instead of the rail mounted front sight.
