View Full Version : to chap or not to chop

alright I recently bought a western field M550A (mossberg 500) with a full choke 30" barrel (3" chamber) and was thinking about chopping it down to 19" or so. now my question for you is. is a 30" mossberg barrel rare enough not to chop it?

Eh, you could probably trade it for a short barrel. But it's never worth the trouble to me. I'd chop it if I knew I wouldn't need it as a bird gun (and I wouldn't 'cause I have plenty of those). I don't think a 30" mossberg barrel is anything special.

Why not buy the extended magazine and buy the correct 20 inch barrel. This way you will have the capability of 8 rounds in a shorter barrlel. Cutting down the extended barrel will not work with the extended magazine because of the magazine cap point welded to the correct barrel.

+1 trading it for a 20 inch with the extended mag!

Trade it, sell it, or keep it and get another barrel but don't chap it or chop it

You're not going to get much for that shotgun in a sale or trade. Yes, it's a Mossberg, but it's really not....in terms of trade or sale value. If you put any money into it, it's very doubtful you'll get it back. If you don't need a bird gun, but do need a HD/SD gun, chopping it is the most economical route. If you're one who thinks you have to have 8 rounds and 5 just won't work, then you probably better off saving your pennies and buying a $200 shotgun specifically for HD/SD.

yea I like the look of the mossbergs with a 18" barrel and a 5 shot tube. I have a mossy with a 20" with a 8 shot tube and I just dont care for it

it is chapped (19"):D I am waiting for the JB weld to hold the sight bead in place

I like a man who makes a decission. What did you do with the other 11 inches? LOL
I don't know whether you need the bead sight or not. I have a coach gun and a 20 inch pump. I think of them more as a point and shoot gun. I suspect the bead at the end of the barrel is more cosmetic than useful.
Hope it serves you well.

Looks like you really put this idea to the Chapping Block before making a decision.

ahh looking at the value of a 30" barrel (50-60 buck used) and the price of a 18-20" (>$70)the choice wasnt hard

Now to make it into a nice pistol grip stock. Did you chamfer the barrel after chopping?

yea that is what I am doing right now (file part done now for the steel wool) and uhh no pistol grip stocks or well anything synthetic. I prefer the classic look
