View Full Version : US Marine LINE System?

Does anyone out there know anything about the LINE (Linear <something> Neural <something>, I think) system of hand-to-hand combat that the USMC began teaching recruits around 1989? I'm curious because I never got trained in it (I graduated from Parris Island in 1988) but some of the Marines I knew who did learn it thought that the LINE stuff was worthwhile. The concept was to teach recruits a few simple, non-acrobatic techniques that could be used on the battlefield (with poor footing, heavy gear being worn, et cetera).
The unarmed combat training that I received was very rudimentary, done more to make recruits feel like well-rounded warriors than anything else. To paraphrase the instructor, "The Marine Corps gives you a rifle and teaches you how to use it. If you're such a poor shot that you let the other guy get close enough for a fist fight, you deserve to get your ass kicked". :)

Matt, Palidine press has the book in print, U.S. Marines Close-Quarters Combat Manual(ISBN 0-87364-889-7). I checked with a good friend of mine who was a CCI trained in LINE. He said the book was prettymuch a copy of the official manual without the last few chapters. It is very basic but is good material. Like any combat drill it must be rehearsed repeatedly to do any good. You also may want to check out John Kary at American Combatives Association and the Gung Ho Chuan Association. They were both started by former Marines practicing WWII CQC. They are not LINE but you may find them of interest. Hope this helps.

By the way it's "Linear In-fighting Neural-Overide Engagement" program. Those adresses are www.americancombatives.com (http://www.americancombatives.com) and www.ghca.org (http://www.ghca.org)

The most dangerous weapon system that you can unleash in war is a Marine Rifle Man and his M-16.

The most dangerous weapon system that you can unleash in training is a second lieutenant with his compass. :D
Awl556, thanks for the info.

Sorry Matt, you're mistaken.
The 2nd Lt with a compass is the SECOND most dangerous thing.
First is TWO butter bars! One with a map, the other with a radio and they're trying to call arty!
Your mind is your primary weapon.

Ah! Unintential friendly airbursts directly overhead!! :->

It may be pretty old, but I got a good laugh. It is funny how some of it still holds true today.
