I keep getting rust on various parts of my M1 such as the part of the opp rod where my finger touches it. I want to remove the rust so I ordered this...

http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-82138-Naval-Jelly-Remover/dp/B000GKW2Q4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1293243138&sr=8-2

I also then want to put Duracoat Clear SL on the rifle so that it doesn't rust again. I'm just not sure if I should do this to my M1 and what do you guys think of the rust remover?

If it was my Garand I'd make sure it was wiped down after use & I'd apply a generous coat of Breakfree CLP to the metal parts. I'd also store it in a silicone impregnated gunsock.

Naval jelly will not match the color of the parkerizing and will leave a blotchy appearance.

To kill the rust, do the following:

Degrease the part with denatured alcohol.
Boil the part in distilled water for at least 30 minutes (rust goes from red oxide to black oxide).
Scoop the part out of the boiling water and shake the water off. It should dry almost instantly.
Douse the part in WD40 to displace any remaining water.
Wipe the part off with a clean cloth.
Oil the part with a good quality gun oil.

DO NOT put that crap on your Garand! You'll destroy the finish. A light coat of oil will protect it just fine. It should be parkerized already which will protect it pretty well but where the finish is gone just oil it.

Use a CLP like G-96 and coat everything after disassembling the rifle then let it sit for a couple hours. Then just wipe down with a clean rag and reassemble with CLEAN hands. Then just grease the action as per garand styles.
