I see in its catalouge that its part of the reciever and has special ruger rings to fit it, but cant seem to find out if other rings will fit or if their is a way to mount a section of rail up there. Im looking at getting one (need to handle one in store to see how i like it) and would like to know the options for mounting something like a reflex sight.

There's this GG&G mount (http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=241&parents=156). There's also the Ultimak rail (http://ultimak.com/BuyMini.htm) which doesn't obstruct access to the action if you just want to use a red dot or a scout scope.

Your choice of mount depends on whether you wish to retain use of your iron sights as an option to whatever optic you choose. Weaver makes see-through rings for the Mini-14 Ranch version, and B-Square makes a see-under rail that also allows for a quick detach if you want to pull the bolt out of the receiver. The Scout Mount is pretty cool, but it positions your optic farther forward...

Stick with the Ruger rings. I put mine on when I intend to do some serious shooting, and I'm not just 'wasting ammo'.
