Hey guys, i've got one of the newer SS Mini-14s. I'm wondering if chopping a little off the barrel and threading it for a brake is possible, and if so, how much yall think that might cost.

I'm basically wanting to turn my Mini into a shorter, muzzle-braked version...instead of selling the one i've got and getting a blued tactical version.
Anyone have any info? I'm in Texas BTW in case yall know of a gunsmith that'd do a good job.

Also, if it can be done, couldn't i just choose what thread size i wanted on the barrel, to match the threads on whatever brakes i'm interested in?

Thanks.

What part of Texas are you in?

Don't know how much it would cost, but you will want to get 9/16 X 24tpi threads so you can use AR related brakes.

Do you have the newer series Mini with the tapered barrel?

Just be aware that you don't have too much chopping room on a mini 14. They mostly come with 18.5" barrels, and anything under 16 is a big no-no with the BAFTE without the right short barreled rifle paperwork.

How the hell do you quote someone?

Anyway, i'm in central TX, just North of Austin.
I've got the tapered barrel mini.

I found a great mini gunsmith @ a site called perfectunion.com. He's called the "gun doctor" and did fine work on this mini.

Cut to 16.25" and threaded for an A2 FH.

I forgot where I got the front night site but I found it on the same website.

Click the "quote" icon on your toolbar, then paste the quote.

So you're in the Fredericksburg, College Station area?

I am just south of Dallas and we have a pretty good armorer/gunsmith called "Alpine" or something like that.

Ok, i was going to say, i wouldn't even bother cutting an older series mini down.

I believe this is a 580 series mini, older yes. I had the barrel shortened to reduce "barrel whip" and the advantage of a flash hider.

Grouping here was using British Radway Green SS109 milsurp @ 100 yds. I was a crappy shot on this day due to too many Monster energy drinks and cigarettes.

AR brakes and flash hiders are threaded 1/2 - 28.

Correct, my mistake. My Grendel has a 9/16 x 28 tpi thread.

I thought it was 1/2 X24tpi

I also had my mini worked over by him. I was VERY happy with the results. Increased accuracy, better balance, more ersatility with gas port bushings, triger VERY nice.Unluckily for you due to health concerns and moving I don't think he does much work any more. (http://www.greatwestgunsmithing.com/mini14.htm) His site has said temporarily closed for some time.

Threading a barrel is relatiely simple. He list his price as $125. I received prices from others for as little as $80. I was getting a lot more work done that others couldn't do so I had him cut and thread mine as part of a package deal. If you just want the gun threaded I don't think it would be worth the money to ship it somewhere.
