Before the "get the AR" comments start coming, I already have 2 of those. I just really like the traditional look and feel of the Mini-14 and am considering picking one up. The tactical has a slightly shorter barrel, but it does have the flash suppressor. The Ranch model comes in stainless (which I prefer over blued), but has no flash hider. Does the flash hider affect accuracy?

It's not a flash hider, it's a movable weight to change the barrel harmonics.

It is the target rifle that has the harmonic barrel tuner / dampener

I don't think there would be an appreciable difference in accuracy on a Mini 14 with or without a flash hider. I would consider adding a stabilizer bar to minimize barrel vibration and improve overall accuracy of the platform

So will that "movable weight to change the barrel harmonics" on a 16 inch barrel be more accurate than an 18 inch barrel without one?

LukeA is mistaken, the tactical does have a flash hider, but I don't know if it affects accuracy.

I bought a tactical recently.

With peep sight at 50 yds I was shooting abt 1" groups(PMC 55 grain BT )...now let me say FIRST, I have never used a peep before. and second-my dominant eye has a cataract forming and I am having trouble sighting now.(59 yrs old)

I was pretty happy with it at that range under MY conditions. Although, I MAY be opening peep a bit for low light level shooting.

As I plan to use it for a coyote gun, and most of my shots have been under 50 yds , it will be fine with the peep.

I WILL be putting a low powered scope on it soon, and will report on any improvement.

Remember, when loading ,you cannot load magazine and then pull bolt.

Bolt must be back when loading magazine into well if there are rounds in it.

At least this is how mine works. Also manual shows this.

Yes, its very possible. Mini-14's have very flexible barrels because of their design. ...even the newer "heavy" barrel is still like a wet noodle compared to many other designs. And with any barrel, the longer it is, the more likely it is to flex, bend and twist while the projectile is going down the rifling.

The only benefits longer barrels offer are more room to increase velocity and a longer sight radius if you use the iron sights.

Homerboy,
A clarification: The Mini-14 Tactical has a conventional synthetic stock and a flash suppressor (it is a Series 581 rifle according to Ruger); the Mini-14 with ATI is the same rifle with the pistol grip and rails, this lacking a flash suppressor. The Sereis 581 has a new front sight and the thicker barrel. I own the Tactical. I have had it for about 2 1/2 months and have put 600 rounds through it. It is every bit as accurate as the Stag M4 I own; both shooting 2-2.5 MOA with their peep sights. The Mini Tactical is the first Mini-14 (I own two Series 580 Ranch Rifles) I've owned that does not heat up the barrel and walk the POI. With the barrel hot it does open groups, as does the M4. The Tactical front sights have the protective wings flared as on M4; this provides less clutter in the sight picture than the Series 580 front sight protective wings; thus target acquisition is quicker. I can shoot quicker and more accurately with a conventional stock than with the AR15 platform. The only pistol grip rifle platform I have shot that was as quick as a conventionally stocked military rifle for me is the FN-FAL.
