So ordered a Remington 700 SPS Varmint last Monday, went to the gun store yesterday to see if it has arrived yet (it did not ) and also looked at scope rings. He asked me if the gun comes with a base and I didnt know. What is the base and does it come with it? I would asume it is what the rings mount on.
And also how much are they?
Thanks,
Joshua

No, it's not what the rings mount on. That's the base.

Most rifles do not come with a base, although I wouldn't buy one until the rifle got there. Did you get a combo deal or anything?

When you buy a base, you can spend as much as you want. You first need to figure out what kind you want. One piece, two piece, dovetail, etc. Flat or MOA.

You can Google for the pros and cons of the different types. I've got a two-piece picatinny rail on my hunting rifle and a one piece pic rail on my target rifle. Dovetail mounts are a viable choice, but I'd say the least popular anymore. They are cheapest.
