Since I haven't seen a wide base and narrow base side by side, what are the differences? Are they interchangeable? Thanks

"Wide" and "narrow" base refer to the width of the front sight base on a gas cylinder. Early gas cylinders had a narrow base and only allowed limited lateral movement of the front sight before it hung over the side. This was corrected with a wider front sight base, hence the names.
The two gas cylinders are interchangeable and can be used on any gas-port Garand.
