Is it possible to get a decent AR-15 for under $800 dollars? If so who makes them cause everyone in my area is charging $1200 or more for the colt and Bushmaster models.

You should be able to find several brands including Stag and Bushmaster for around $800. I picked up a Stag for $775 recently. It is a model 2 and shots extremely well, very satisfied. Would like to eventually get a higher end SR or Colt but just now getting into AR's. I say just keep your eyes open, there are some good deals on this site. Never get in a hurry and a bargains will show up.

Bushmaster has several of their versions listed on Bud's site in the $800 price range. They make a decent AR. Olympic has guns under $800 but they get mixed reviews. DPMS also has ARs in the $800 range and generally get good reviews.

Build it yourself---my current build using a DD barrel and DD BCG will be in the $800 range when I'm done----a lot of searching and patience got me first class parts on the cheap.

It's a little low unless you go wth a used rifle but you get a really nice S&W M&P15 (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_763/products_id/58561) for $950.

everyone in my area
What area? Exactly what kind of AR do you want?

BTW, Colt gets a premium, because people will pay more for them.

Olympic Arms makes a "Plinker Plus" model that's not too shabby for $650-$700.

I bought a Del-Ton recently... $850 out the door... Haven't had a chance to take it out even to sight in the scope... Hopefully I'll have a decent range report on it by the end of the week...

Overall it's a pretty well-built rifle, just from what I can tell by taking it apart and cleaning, cycling/dry-firing a bit.

Olympic, Double Star, DPMS sportical, are a few that may be at that price piont. Go to a local gun show. The last show here, (2 weeks ago), I saw all those brands under $800, new. They are all plinkers. The sportical has a flat top receiver and flat top gas block. You can pick the sights/optics you like the best.

In this price range I'd look for a Del-Ton, Stag, CMMG or possibly even Sabre for a bit more. If you piece it together you could be right around that price with a BCM, or DD which are big steps up from most of the others mentioned here.

Build it yourself. Get a lower from Spikes (http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=104) and the rest of the parts from M&A (http://www.mapartsinc.com/)

I ordered a Del Ton upper assembly back in March and I still haven't heard from them. I need to call them I guess, this wait is getting excessive.

Truck- You shouldn't still be waiting. AFAIK all back orders are all caught with most companies, of course there are still waits on LaRue Stealths but they are custom ordered. I'd get calling or just cancel it and buy from someone that has inventory in stock, which is virtually everyone.

Del ton was really behind on certain orders awhile back. I had to wait a long time for my chrome lined barrel. They weren't nearly as far behind on chromemoly barrels.

There are plenty of places to get a quality stipped lower for less than or about $100 these days.

Spikes Tactical is a great value as mentioned.

Also Rainer sells some very nice value forged and billet lowers
http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1186
or this for billet http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=122

also http://www.essentialarms.com/ieLOWERSANDPARTS.HTML has nice quality lowers that I have had good luck with

or you could get this complete lower for $300 http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=312002&reference=/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi%3Fsearch%3Daction%26keywords%3Dlower
save a week or 2 more or whatever it takes you to scratch up an extra $200 and go with a http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid-16.htm

then add a Bravo BCG and charging handle http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/AR-15-Upper-Receiver-Bolt-Carrier-Parts-s/2.htm
add a MBUS http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Magpul-MBUS-Rear-Back-Up-Iron-Sight-Black-p/mag246%20black.htm

and you have one of the best DI AR's on the market for around $1000!

ETA- Here are some more decent deals on quality upper recievers, I believe most of these are complete uppers so that would include the CH, BCG and HG. http://www.pkfirearms.com/content/1/20/117/9?page=3

The Olympic Arms should be in your $ range. I've had 2, and the were both good guns, I'd go with the "heavy" barrelled version, of the two of mine it seemed more accurate.

I got a used (but not abused) range-rental Bushmaster that looks like the Olympic Arms rifle in post #7 for $660 out the door. That's a good price but not a stellar one, so you should be able to find a similar deal if you don't absolutely have to have a new one.

I just bought a stag upper from M4store and a RRA complete lower (with 2 stage trigger) for a little over 700 bucks.

Of course the initial investment is the low side, now it's time to switch out everything.

CDNN is currently selling a S&W MP15 ORC with 18 magazines for $699. The catch is you have to buy another firearm in order to get that deal; but there are definitely good deals to be had on ARs right now.

Buds sells the post-ban Colt match for $1100. That is about the same price as the Stag 2TL or 8L (gas piston) and $175 less than S&W M&P15T (the one with the foreward rail and troy sights). I'm in NJ and need a "compliant" model and also shoot lefty. Debating which one to get

Colt advantage -- I've generally heard that quality is better than Stag or S&W (testing of components, 1:7 twist, M4 feedramps). But, doesn't have the forward rail (which I don't "need" but would like to have to install some toys).

Stag advantage -- built for lefties; can get a gas-piston version, has rails and flip up sights; disadvantage -- not as good a build as Colt

S&W advantage -- possible better quality than Stag (??) and comes with rails and troy sights.

Which would you choose?

I keep hearing people say if you want a "range toy" or plinker, Stage, Bushy, etc is fine, but if you want a self-defense/fighting gun, get a Colt or better (LMT, Noveske). Why is that?? I'm not in the military or LEO, but do want a rifle available for home defense in a "Katrina" type scenario. Won't the Stag suffice for that?
