38/357 Titegroup Loads

I posted this earlier as part of another persons post. Need some help putting together some loads for 38 special and 357 using Titegroup.

I have lead 158 grain SWC bullets, Berry's 158 grain RN, Remington 158 JHP

Having trouble interpreting data on these bullets and Titegroup combo.

Here is what I find:

Lyman Book Data:
158 grain Linotype - 2.9 grains
158 grain JHP - no data

Hodgdon 2007 manual:
158 grain HDY XTP - 3.9 grains

This shows a difference of +1.0 grain to go from a Linotype bullet to a JHP in the same grain. How is that possible. 1.0 grain of Titegroup is significant.

I am looking for a nice load, not anything heavy until I load some 357 with the JHP's.

I have the same problem with the 357 loads, no data. Can someone help me out with what they are using, appreciate it. Thanks

Check out IMR web site, thats where I found my loads for berry's 148 grain hbwc. I'm loading for 38, 357, it was around 3 grains. They have a load data chart that can help you figure out loads for about any caliber, bullet combo.

Berry's website recommends you use low to mid range datea for jacketed bullets for their bullets / but you need to use data for a similar profile..

In the 158gr RN - I think Berry's is advising you to use the XTP data
and in .357 mag Hodgdon TiteGroup calls for 5.4 min / 6.1 max. For Berry's RN 158gr - I've loaded a few / and have been using 5.6 gr of TiteGroup with good results in my guns. When I use Montana Gold bullets / 158gr CMJ ( which is a much harder casing ) I load them up to 5.8 grains.

Hodgon data say .38 spl 158gr XTP 3.5 min / 3.9 max and I load mine to 3.6 because I'm looking for a light load for the grandkids to shoot. Cast bullets ( 3.2 to 3.8 in their data ).

I don't load any lead bullets - so I can't give you a personal recipe there.

I shoot 3.2gr TG under a 158 SWC. No problems. Light recoil.

I cast my own 158 grain SWC bullets. I use 3.2 grains of Titegroup as listed in the Lee reloading manual for the .38 special. I use 4.5 grains of TiteGroup in my .357mag. Good accuracy, light recoil and a nice bang! :D Citywaterman
