Hi, I tried to look this up but I couldn't find anything so I'll ask some experts. I am just getting into CAS and I plan on getting two Ruger Vaqueros, Marlin Cowboy rifle all in .38-357, and a Stoeger Double Barrel Coach 12 guage shotgun. I am trying to buy American as much as possible although I'm not sure about the Stoeger. Can anyone see any problem with these choices? I know that the .38-.357 aren't western cartridges but I am doing this for fun and those are less expensive options. Any and all advice gratefully accepted. Thanks, Mike

Those are good choices. The Stoeger is made in Turkey. Here's where you need to be. http://sassnet.com/forums/index.php?showforum=22

Oh, I don't know that I'd say that... true that the .38 spl isn't an original authentic "old west" cartridge, but it's as close as you can get to the .38 Long Colt, and actually outperforms it by a bit.

A lot of beginners use .38s, and most of the gamesters use .38s with squib loads. Gamesters are the folks who will go to any lengths to win. Modify guns, light loads, shoot two handed etc. Most of the CAS shooters don't do this though. Most of us have too much fun with our outfits, our personnae, and our guns.
I use BP and compressed loads in my .45s and shotgun. I literally have a blast and I hear "What the hell was that?" from a lot of folks. I don't care if I win, I have fun just being there.
Welcome to CAS regardless of what gun/caliber you use.
Incidentally some of the coach guns do not have regulated barrels. Each barrel shoots to a different point of aim. I use a Winchester 1897 with 20"barrel and winchoke full.
