Newbie, And Comment on Win. 410

Hello all. This is my first post here. I was drawn to this site by an interest in the Winchester Lever 410. I read a thread on the subject of this lever 410's pros and cons as a home defense gun. I didn't see any comments on the fact that the 45 Long Colt will load, chamber, and fire in this shotgun as easily as the 410 shotshell. Any comments on that would be appreciated. I've always wanted one of these Winchesters for sparrow control, but have yet to get one. Don't know the availability or what kind of price range to expect today.

Unless the gun in question is designed to fire both, it is a bad idea to fire .45 Colt bullets - .452 diameter - through a .410 diameter barrel. Do you know for a fact that the Winchester will chamber .45 LCs? People sometimes make that assumption only to find that it doesn't work.
Guns are made to fire both are invariably chambered for the larger diameter.

The Win. 410 I was looking at was at a local gunshop. The owner got down a box of 45 LC out of curiosity and loaded them up. He then ran them all through by working the lever. They chambered and ejected fine. As far as firing the rounds, I can't be certain as to how the trajectory would suffer, but I assume they would shoot fairly straight at, say, 100 feet or so. This is based on my assumption that the 45 is the correct size for the standard 410 bore. If I'm wrong on that, then please explain the difference in standard and the guns that do shoot both. I would be greatful for that info. Thanks

One of my friends has a single shot derringer that shoots .410 and .45 Colt.

The 94 is not the world's strongest action, though it handles the 40K PSI of the 30-30 cartridge forever.

Trying to get a .452" slug down a 410 bore HAS to spike pressures way up.

Dunno if it would be more than 40K or if they heat treat the 410 receivers the same as the 30-30 ones.

It would certainly shorten the useful life of the weapon.

And possibly that of the operator.

Never fire ammo of any kind in a gun chambered otherwise.

If you want a carbine capable of firing 45LC, get one so chambered.

I don't know enough about the 9410 to know if some of them shoot 3" shells. If it does, 5 000 buck is available. That round is now slouch. If it's 2 1/2 only, then the 3 000 buck round is available but obviously it packs less punch.

The Winchester is 2.5" only.

Thanks for the input. The 410 I'm using to hold back the English Sparrow onslaught on the chicken feed out here is a Mossberg Bolt action with a 3 rnd belly magazine and a full choke. It reaches out and taps the sparrows from well over 100 ft. which seems a pretty tight pattern for 410. Unfortunately, it bears a trademark of a lot of the older Mossbergs...a cracked stock. And at the price of ammo, if each shot isn't a hit, I'm pretty well wasting my money.

Just thought I'd mention that they do make .410 slugs. They might be less expensive than .45 Colt.
