I just bought a relative a new Mossberg 500 20 ga combo 18.5 barrel and 26 in barrel. The gun is marked 3 in chambers.
It is not marked Magnum. I bought some 3 in magnum buckshot to go with it.

Is it safe to shoot the magnum loads in this gun?

It's safe and perfectly normal. Some choose to use the term Magnum, some don't.

3 inch is the old magnum:D But yes as zipster said, any 3 inch is safe and when 3 inch was invented they were called 3 inch magnum... them some masochist decided he needed more punishment so he had some sadist whip up 3 1/2 inch turkey loads:eek:

Yeah, we bought 4 of those for the boys for christmas this year 3" mags are fine. Hogdogs I have the 835 ulti mag in 3.5" mag , man it does kick like a mule when loaded with 3.5's . The only time I use the 3.5's is for turkey or geese, and usually it's not needed. I will say this though, watchin a turkey do a back flip at 30 yd's is well worth the price you pay for pullin the trigger.;)

As far as I know, 3" still is the magnum for a 20 ga. I'm not aware of anybody that has tried turning out a 3 1/2" 20 ga yet (just wait, I'm sure someone will try).

If I remember correctly, sometime in the last few years Hastings put out a 3.5" 20ga slugs. I think they were mated with an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter and claimed good range and accuracy.
