View Full Version : If all pump shotguns are the same price, which one would you buy?

I think when most people buy things, they consider price to be one of the most important factors.
I personally think all firearms will be sold for a set price later this century.
So let's just pretend that all the pump shotguns in America are being sold for $200 a piece.
Which one would you buy and why?
I'll list some popular shotguns in the poll.
Also, be advised that when I say 870 series, I mean everything from wingmasters to express to slug guns, etc. Unless specified otherwise, I am talking about the brand in general.

Mossberg 500, 590 or 835...
Just prefer the ergonomic lay out...

Browning BPS
Bottom ejection, safety on top of receiver, cast neutral stock - fit and finish / but I'm not a tactical guy ....with shotguns.

Remington IF it were a Wingmaster -- $400 is too much for an Express.
BPS otherwise.

As a leftie, give me the Browning, or even an Ithaca

I'm not in the market for a pump gun but if I was I'd definitely go for the Browning BPS. Looked closely at one a couple times and almost bought one just because I liked the way it felt, the way it looked, and the bottom eject too. Plus, it's a Browning.

There's no wrong answers on that poll. All of those shotguns are good'uns.
It boils down to personal preference.

Mossberg for the ambidextrous design and John Moses Browning patented receiver. However, I'm not familiar with the BPS and from another post it may also be good for lefties, so that might be my choice if I knew more about them.
Mostly I care about the safety. I don't want to guess whether a button needs to be pushed left or right. The Mossberg is simple and intuitive: push foward to shoot, pull back to make safe.

I said 500, but I might go for a BPS. That would be really difficult. I really love the efgonomics on the 500, especially the tang safety. Does it have the rack safety or whatever it is called the new 870s and 500s have? Thing annoys me.

Platinum edition grade 7 BPS. Custom wood, custom engraving.

I'll be greedy and go for a Winchester Model-12 in 28-gauge. A custom shop letter grade Remington Wingmaster wouldn't be bad, either.

Regarding which of the two, Mossberg or Remington shoot the best, shrugs shoulders, I have both but never fired either. Both of mine are in the 18" barrel Home Defense models. I'm not a fiddler, that is to say I'm not big on fiddling as in fiddling with the 870 slide release clutch, wrong place, awkward to reach/access, seems to me to be a poor choice for a tactical firearm, albeit I'm no expert on the subject, just applying some laymen's common sense to it. I also prefer the design of a rear drag adusting on a spinning real rather then reaching forward with fishing line pulling out fast trying to tighten, or loosen it, some designs just seem better thought out, to me,then others. After a full night of beer aswillings, I prefer a zipper over jean buttons also...again, it's all got to do with easy access in a pinch, so to speak, well, on the subject of pinching, that's the one drawback on zippers, especially if one's n a hurry and a little tipsy, OUCH! Do you have any prejudices against a nice new-in-the-box-old-stock Model-12? Enough cash and they come out of hiding.

I have a Wingmaster I've been using since the 1970s. I have five other shotguns but that is my only pump and I'm not likely to buy another. So that's my vote. ;)

That would be set by who? D.C. would love to set the price of all guns equal... $10,000 each... America is a free enterprise system where companies can make their products how they wish and price as they wish. The strong survive as do those with well made goods at a fair price with a customer base.

I already have one Ithaca, and it's wonderful. As wonderful as it is, I don't know if I need another one.
I think I could be convinced to try a Winchester Model 12 or perhaps one of the Benellis. Or maybe I'd go for something totally weird, like that South African upside down forward pumping riot shotgun with the two tube magazines. The Neostead, I think it's called.
I'd definitely choose an Ithaca, though, if I didn't already have one. It's smoother, lighter, prettier, cooler, and more ergonomic than the 870.
Katrina Guy, you are the only other person I have ever seen that has a problem with the 870's slide release being on the wrong side of the triggerguard.
That's one reason I like the Ithaca. It's the same style slide release in the same place, just mirrored on the other side of the triggerguard where I can actually hit it. I swear, it takes an act of John Moses Browning to put a slide release where I can actually hit it.
I don't think I like tang safeties. I've missed some clay pigeons since I didn't notice that the tang safety was activated, whereas I would have immediately felt the activated crossbolt safety on my Ithaca. Of course, to each his own.

For me, it would depend entirely on use.
For hunting, it would be the Winchester Model 12. There is no smoother, faster pump action before or since.
For combat, I would scour the world for a High Standard Flite King in riot gun configuration, or the Mitchell High Standard equivalent. That thing is built like a tank and will absorb much more abuse that almost any you have listed, even the Mossberg.

I picked other...not gonna say what my other is cause I don't wanna get pigpiled. Might be considered sacrilege. As a disclaimer, of the named guns on the list I've only shot the Remington and the Mossberg...both are great, but I have a different preference.

Kozak, I prefer the action release location of the mossberg. I can operate it with my right hand while the gun is in a full shoulder mount without taking my hand from the grip;)

I voted for the 870, which could be deemed as heresy (for those who "know" me) as Im generally a SuperNova and/or Mossberg 590 fan (I own both). However, given that you said "any model of 870," I was essentially thinking of the 870 Police as I think Remington does a fine job when it comes to those weapons involving the proper amount of QC and/or solid parts. In addition, parts/accessory availability and/or cost played a huge part regarding my choice. A close second would have been the Mossberg 590A1, followed by the Benelli SuperNova Tactical.
Now, had you also added that replacement parts/parts availability/cost of parts/accessory availability were all on equal ground, regardless of make/model, then I would have chosen the SuperNova Tactical above all others.

I am a big fan of pump action shotguns and have two of them. I started out with the Remington 870, but soon found out that I really enjoy the Benelli Super Nova Tactical, so I bought one for myself. I was looking for a shotgun that is more resistant to moisture than my 870 and I think the Super Nova fit that bill quite nicely. Its lightweight polymer/steel reinforced receiver makes it easier to carry too. I also like the ghost ring sights so I can shoot slugs more accurately.

It would be a hard pick. My Browning is smooth like butter. My 835 is a little course but will handle bigger loads. But I guess my 500 Mariner would be the one.

I am highly disappointed in ya'll... The OP knew if he thru in them last four options, ya;ll would fall for the "third party" candidate like many of us did for H. Ross Perot:mad: It worked too! Mossberg lost to remington worse than most other pump 'em up gun polls!:D

The Browning BPS has all the features I want and is well-made and well-finished to boot.
