I'm looking at getting a .300 WSM in the next few months. I have narrowed it down to a Browning A-Bolt, Remington 700, and Savage 16FHSS. Fortunately, I have access to shooting all three types of rifles and will make my final decision on the rifle when it comes time. However, I do need some suggestions for some scopes for this rifle. I need a variable powered scope, preferrably somewhere between 4 - 14 power. Also, I would like to get one without an adjustable objective because I will need to make quick shots. I also need a scope that will allow me to shoot out to 500 yards with great accuracy. I've looked at the Bushnell Elite 3200 or the Leupold VX-I or Leupold VX-III. Any suggestions or first hand accounts of success with a certain scope? Thanks.

I want to say someone out there makes a scope and called it a shortmag because it is made for shortmag actions.

I would go with the Bushnell 3200 over the vx-i. If you got the money for a VX-III then go that route. ALso look at the Bushnell elite 4200 they are some of the best scopes comming out of japan today. My 308 wears an elite 4200 6-24x40mm

Hardly anybody makes a non-AO scope in that magnification range. The closest in a really good quality scope that I'm aware of is the Sightron SII Big Sky 3-12x42 (http://www.swfa.com/pc-12607-1511-sightron-3-12x42-sii-big-sky-riflescope.aspx). If you want a cheapie Pentax used to make a low cost 4-16x50 non-AO Gameseeker. I keep one as a spare and its not a bad scope. Almost everyone else includes AO or side focus on scopes over 10x. If you don't mind a step down in power I'd give a serious look at a Bushnell Elite 4200 (http://www.swfa.com/pc-1277-185-bushnell-25-10x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx) or Nikon Monarch (http://www.swfa.com/pc-8759-2201-nikon-25-10x42-monarch-riflescope.aspx) in 2.5-10x40ish. Both offer limited availability versions in 3-9x40. The Bushy (http://www.swfa.com/pc-7280-185-bushnell-3-9x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx) will set you back about $250 at Natchez or $300 at SWFA, and the Nikon Team Primos (http://www.swfa.com/pc-9244-2119-nikon-3-9x40-team-primos-riflescope.aspx) is $220 at SWFA. Both are much better scopes than a VX-I. I own two of the Team Primos and like them a lot. The Nikons have about 3/8-1/2" more eye relief than a Bushnell. That may or may not come in handy on a magnum caliber rifle.

sholling,

Can you give me a few more details about your Nikon Monarch scopes? Such as what calibers you have them mounted on and if your scopes have the BDC reticle? I looked at the Monarch BDC the other day at Cabela's and the salesman told me he didn't like them because they weren't precise enough. They were just made to get a shot within the killzone but beyond that no more precise. I'd love to get one if the shots are precise. I'd like a scope that enables me to reach out and touch the targets, but still be a tack-driver at the range...

I have Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40 on two 30-06 rifles, a Howa and a Tikka T3 lite. I also have Nikon Monarch 2-9x32 on a Howa 308 that I use as a brush rifle. All are bright and very clear. As far as the BDC is concerned that's personal taste. I happen to like them for what they are - quick reference marks to get you into the kill zone at various ranges. But you have to learn how the marks relate to point of impact with your chosen round. They are not there for precision target work. Mine are zeroed for 200m.

If you're looking for a target scope then look at something with a duplex reticle and target turrets.

Thank you for the information. I think I've decided on a Bushnell Elite 3200 5x15x40 with target turrets and a Mil-Dot reticle. Although it has an AO, this seems like a decent scope. Most of my other scopes have adjustable objective so it won't be much of a problem. Now I just need to get it and get my rifle.

The scope I decided on is here: http://www.swfa.com/pc-9838-184-bushnell-5-15x40-elite-3200-rifle-scope.aspx
