View Full Version : Maverick 88 Security?
April 14, 2009, 02:19 AM
I am in the market for a home defense shotgun and my local shop has a couple of Maverick 88 security. They were marked between $299~$379.
They have blue finish with synthetic stocks, pump action & 18~22" barrels.
I believe that they were produce by Mossberg and they are the cheaper version of a 500 field.
For owners, what do you think of them? Are they as reliable as the Remmy 870? My uncle is trying to talk me into a Remington 870 express instead, but I don't want to pay that much for a shotgun.

The Maverick series are very good shotguns and the only difference between them and the Mossberg 500 are the position of the safety.
I have a field model with the 28" barrel and I love it.
My 88 was far more reliable then my bro's 870 super mag, in fact my bro is selling his 870 to a friend and is going to buy a 8-shot 88.(and have about $200 left for ammo.)
Don't let me talk you out of the 870 if it is what you want get it but I would recommend that you get the 88 instead.
However if your shop is asking $299-379 they are very over priced, my local dealer after his fee can get the 8-shot model for $205 plus tax.

Great gun but yeah those prices are high. I paid $229 for the 6 shot Security. Those sound more like 500 prices.

-$200 in walmart for the Mav 88 with 28 inch barrel and accu-choke with a mod.
18 inch barrel is +/- $100. That gives a variety of uses for 300 or sell the 28 inch new with choke for 85 bucks.

I found one in Walmart for $199 with the 28" barrel.
If I do pick it up, where an I get a shorter barrel for cheap?? :confused:I will probably ended up using it for both HD and trap.

For that price I want an Remington 870 or a Mossy 500 or 590.
