I have recently inherited a J Stevens Arms and Tool Company double barrel side-by-side shotgun, model number 235, serial number A 7680. Can anyone give me some info on what year this gun might have been manufactured? I don't care what it's worth. It is my grandfather's gun and thus has sentimental value; I'd just like to know a little more about the gun. I know J Stevens Arms and Tool Company was founded in 1864 and renamed to J Stevens and Company in 1886. I also know that my grandpa bought this (at that time already "well-used") 12 gauge hammer-type shotgun for about $10 from a bartender in the 1930s. Any ideas?

You will want to verify the chamber length and whether it is a black powder proofed gun or smokeless proofed... That is all I know about old shotguns...

Not quite. It was J. Stevens and Co from 1864-1886. It was J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. from 1886-1915. J. Stevens Arms Co. from 1915-1940. Stevens from 1940-1991. The 235 was made from 1912-1932. Since yours is marked J. Stevens Arms and Tool it was made between 1912-1915. It will be good steel but it will also be short chambered since 2 3/4 shells didn't come about until around 1930.
