View Full Version : Cost to have Mossberg 500 Mag Tube removed
April 10, 2009, 04:19 PM
So i took my mossberg 500 to a gunsmith to have the magazine tube removed since i was unable to do it myself and I did not want to shell out the extra money for tools to DIY. As stated above, to get a general idea/opinion what is a reasonable price to have my magazine tube removed?

You couldn't get it off? Mine was pretty easy to unscrew.

It will cost more than the 10-15 dollar strap wrench to do it yerself...

amd6547 - Mine seemed like they used some kind of strong threadlock
hogdogs - Tried that and it seems like i need a better tool cause i keep ending up scratching and scraping the mag tube

There is a very low cost s-wrench that uses a regular rubber strap. Also, if that doesn't free it up, remove stocks and field strip the gun. Place receiver and tube in the oven at 200 or so and have a wet rag freezing in the freezer, remove the gun from oven and quench the tube with the frozen rag to shrink it...

well i already took it to a gunsmith, he thinks its welded on but i had to show him the new magazine tube which has threads so he said like 10-20 bucks

A trained gunsmith would never think a 500 tube of steel would be welded to an aluminum receiver... You really need to use caution choosing a qualified 'smith.

this sounds like a train wreck in the making

I can't wait to read more about this. DId you buy the gun used? Maybe that is why he thought it was welded.

Rewind to the beginning... Why are you removing the magazine tube?

He said he showed the smith "The new tube" I would think its a safe assumption to make that he is installing a new one :P
