What Buckshot load do you trust for home defense?

I don't know what it is, but I've always viewed 00 Buck as the load for taking down man sized animals. It seems to be the favorite load (for man sized animals) of everyone I know.

I keep my S&W 3000 ready with 4 rounds of Remington No. 4 buck in the tube. I have another 5 rounds of S&B 000 buckshot in the butt cuff.

A load of No. 4 averages 27 pellets for a 2 3/4" shell. Total load weight is roughly 1.5 times that of the average 000 load, with almost double the total energy.

Hollywood has made 00 buckshot known as the ultimate buckshot for knockdown power. This may be true, but only to a certain degree. I would use 00 buck only if I wanted barrier penetration. I trust #4 or #1 buckshot for regular use more than 00 buck because of the increased amount of pellets. Even though the pellets in both #4 and #1 buck are much smaller than 00 buck pellets, I have a much higher chance of hitting vital organs with the #4 and #1 buck.

All buckshot rounds have enough penetration to destroy vital organs. Why not use the load with the most pellets?

I keep the first few rounds in my 870 00 Buck to put 'em down and the last few rounds are slugs to finish 'em off. At least that's the plan.

MikeinLa, what kind of slugs do you use for the stock cylinder bore on the Remington 870 because that is what I want to do with my 870?

First four are 00 buck, then slugs (when I figure out what I can get) in case those don't stop em

I understand the point of a buck shot, but why not go all out and just use a rifled slug. get something that wont stop at anyting...!!!!
AMAZING
Or... alternate rounds. Buck, slug buck slug. if the buck shot dont stop them a half-dollar sized hole in their sh*t will...

I have my M1 Super 90 loaded with 2rds of #4 buck with 5rds of 00 buck behind it and 5 slugs in a stock cuff. The #4 for the safety of my neighbors (single family home) with escalating levels of penetration should any bad guys fail to take the hint to leave.

I do like the #1 out of the 20 gauge.

I can only find #3 buck for my 20 gauge locally and it is my short shotgun. I have 00 for the 12 gauge should I need it.
