Considering the purchase and parting with one of the 590's...I'm assuming it's a 500....yay or nay?

Eh.

I got one of those for something like $150 not long ago. That one's seriously overpriced unless it's some kind of collector's item I don't know about.

That is far and above worth the $250! It is a 590 mil spec shot gun. Metal trigger group, metal safety tab, thick barrel and bayo lug!
500 is a 200 buck gun new and a metal trigger group is 100-150 IIRC. The metal safety tab is a few bucks but requires a special removal of the scew to swap (possibly drill it out) and a new one way screw. Heavy parkerized finish and oiled wood stocks.
That is a dream gun to me! I would love to own it!

I bought a combo many years ago. I never use the short barrel. I have taken that shotgun duck hunting and dropped it in the lake and had to dig it out of the muck. I rinsed it off and replaced the rounds and shot a duck within a few minutes.

For reliability it is second to my Citori and it shoots great, better than my Winchester pump and my 870. It has double beads too.

So to answer your question, I would pass on this one, but it depends why you want it. Oh, and you can get them cheap if you look around, even on KSL.com.

Just a guess since I can't find a real wood stock equipped gun to show you the price it is worth $550-750 new and that one looks very nice.
GURU, If I am not incorrect the OP is after a HD/SD shotgun.
I would trade several of my guns to own that particular weapon if it inpects as well as it looks.

you're right brent. that gun is a tank. trying to convince one of my friends to buy it since i'm short on money. it's either a super nice older 500a, or it's 500mils (mossberg 500 milspec) or an older 590 i'm unaware. either way assuming the action is nice and the barrel is smoothe, it's NICE

From before they made the 590. It has the sling swivels, longer feed tube and longer fore-end than the standard 500. I didn't see a bayonet lug on there, which is the primary difference between the 500 and 590 series guns. I own a 500 Field/Security 2 barrel shotgun I use for HD with 18.5" and for trap shooting/bird shooting with 28" vent rib. In Afghanistan we were issued 590s for post duty, and before we went there we had a couple of old wood stock 500a-s in the guard shack at San Mateo.
Either way it's great piece... if you don't already have something similar, but it sounds like you do.
