Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have a Remington 870 (Marine Magnum) for home defense. I have only fired 2 3/4 inch shells through it and have 2 3/4 inch Winchester 1 Buck loaded in it now.

I went to Wally World to stock up on shells, but could only find 2 3/4 shells for "Heavy Game", as well as 3 Inch 00 Buck.

So my question is, can I load and fire 3 inch shells in the 870? I assume this would be OK, but would like to know for sure.

Thanks

It should have all the allowable shell lengths stamped on the side of the barrel.

I could very well be wrong but I think reminton calls a 2 3/4- 3inch capable gun a magnum and the super magnum is capable of 3 1/2...

GunGuy -

you are 100% correct. the barrel says 2 3/4 or 3 Inch shells. Can't believe I never noticed that before. Thanks

Yep- if the barrel is marked for 2 3/4 or 3" shells and your 870's serial number ends in M, you're good to go for 3" shells. Not that you'll want to shoot a whole lot of them though, more than likely. 8^)

I think that after shouldering a few of those 3 inchers, you'll find the 2 3/4 to be plenty.

Almost all 870s can shoot 3 inch just look on the barrel.

Actually less than half of all Remington 870's can shoot 3" shells. Make sure that both the Receiver has a "M" suffix and that the barrel is marked 3" before attempting this activity.

SAFETY FIRST!

Thanks guys. The 3 Inch weren't my first choice, but wally world has been very under stocked lately and I've felt the need to replenish my arsenal.

In relation to handguns, would it be safe to compare the 2 3/4 in vs. 3 inch to the difference between a .38spl vs a .357 round?

I have a Remington 870 magnum and it can take up to 3inch shells. Yours should be fine too, but why don't you just check Remington's website to be safe? That is how I found out 3 inchers where safe for my 870.
