Anybody have any experience with the 130gr bullet in a 270 win? I am currently developing a load using H4831. Max load is 60gr, and that is where I found my best accuracy. Rifle is currently shooting these bullets into a 1.250'' group at 100 yds.

Per Barnes' website, I am loading these bullets .050" off the lands. That seems awful far for my taste, but their tech support guys assured me that was the ticket.

I guess my questions are:

1) Am I going to be wasting my time and barrel trying to find a load that will shave a half inch off the current group by adjusting the seating depth?

2) If I do adjust the seating depth, I will most likely be seating this bullet a little further out towards the lands. I know the rule of thumb is generally to reduce the load 10% when making any changes to col. How many reduced loads would you make and fire before you determine the change you made to the col is safe? I am a little concerned because this is the first load I have had at max.

3) How close to the lands have you had these bullets and did they still maintain decent accuracy?

I have never used these bullets before and I don't know what kind of accuracy and col to expect.

Just a hunch my gun (30-06) same case, likes IMR 4831 and the barnes bullets better. The seating of the bullet tighter, closer or into the lands causes more pressure. That's the last place I tinker with a good load. Copper fouling from improper cleaning is the frist place to start.

IMR 4831 ,It's been my go to load since the 70's and Rem. Bronze Points for Blacktail deer. But don't even think about mixing the data tables for IMR 4831and H4831. They are not as close as the numbers on the canister make them out to be. H4831 is 4-5 grains different than IMR 4831 is my guess. I use them both. H4831 is my 300 WBY load with Barnes 180's.

Anytime you stray into the obsession of tighter groups work your brass more. By that I mean turn the necks, weight sort, trim every time you load, and clean the primer pockets, tumble. Consistent case work is in my mind 60% of a good load. Without good brass work everything else is wasted.

Just my 2 cents...

Seating depth is "Overrated" unless you shoot in the Olympics.
A good load out of a 300.00$ rifle will beat a bad load from a 1,000.00 rifle.

With all due respect, it is my opinion that a 270 is a hunting round not a bench rest caliber. 1.25 inch groups is excelent out of that kind of rifle. Deer, antilope, goats and other big game will not be able to tell the difference if you are a half inch off when you shoot them.
