I use Varget and 68 grain Hornady BTHPM bullets to great effect. I like the Hornady's because they are as accurate as Sierra's but cost a decent bit less.

What is the twist rate of your barrel?

My gun has a 1and12 twist.

The 1/12 twist is ideal for 50-60 grain bullets. It may or may not shoot bullets of heavier or lighter weight.

Generally, I use extruded powder for bolt weapons, and sherical powders for semi-auto. There are surplus powders available that were developed for the 223.

Some canister powder that do well in 223 are:
H322, H335, Win 748, Ramshot TAC, BL-C2, AA2230, and either H or IMR 4895
