View Full Version : Is it bad to keep rechambering the same round?

I just bought a new Benelli M4. I want to keep it fully loaded (4+1+1) for self defense. However, when I want to show my friends it or go to the range, I obviously have to unload it first. Is it bad for the same shotshell to keep being chambered? The last round that I chamber, I am slowly letting the bolt close on it. I ask this cause I've heard that it's bad to keep rechambering the same handgun round.

I've heard people just rotate what shell is in the guns chamber every few days.

I have never known of it being a problem with a shotgun. With a handgun rounds the bullet can be pushed back into the case a bit after a while and cause increased pressure when firing. Just inspect shells for damage and use those shells up on each range visit and replace with new ones occasionally

With a shotgun there is no reason to worry about it.

The issue on handgun cartridges is " setback on the bullets " - but there shouldn't be any significant wear issues on a shotgun shell - in my opinion.

Congrads on the M-4, I still have not ponied up for one. Keep checking the rim of the shell down the spout, if it shows any dings or divots, set it aside and choose another. Rim damage is the only real issue with this.

Shot gun slugs will set back after a while.
With shot shells, the brass will get beat up and can cause a malfunction in an auto loader; often the malfunction is caused by rough edges and burrs on the brass. Just shoot them before they get too bad.

I have load/unload cycled my ammo in my HD shotgun hundreds of times, I do not try to set them in an order. Just cycle them out and reload the gun... I do not try to either have my #1 stay in place nor have it deeper in rotation. Since it is not a bullet getting seated in a chamber I do not see an issue.

I know people who practice reloading a shotgun a lot for 3-gun. Eventually if you cycle shells into a shotgun repeatedly, it will wear the mouths of the hulls and will beat them up so that they might not chamber right. I would reccommend that you cycle your HD rounds every once in a while to ensure they will cycle when they are needed. I've reloaded practice dummy shells for them in the past, usually with Remington STS hulls and they get beat up pretty good.
