Hah! I went to one of the local Wally Worlds today (the one I usually go to is sold out) and found a NEW CVA Buckhorn Magnum for $100 and tax. The kid has a new Christmas present that he hasn't asked for but I know he wants! Wait until he sees it. I have a set of bases and rings to go with the Tasco we changed out on his .243 so it'll have glass too. I love finding a deal now and then.

CVA Buckhorn Magnum

I put one of those on the web-based family wish list my son built. I added a comment to the effect "an excellent gift idea for the budget conscious shopper looking to make an old man happy".

I still don't think I'll get one for Christmas. :(

I've got one that I bought off of this forum. It loves 100 grns of loose 777 and a 50/45 Hornady SST in the low-drag sabot.

You can pay a lot more for an inline muzzleoader but you cannot get one that is any more accurate than a CVA Buckhorn. I have scoped a lot of them. Have also bedded the actions and floated the barrels on lot of others. That gun is as as accurate as any aporting muzzleloader made.

I had a scoped buckhorn mag. and it does very well for the money. But once you buy a knight with a green mountain barrel ,come talk to me!It's night and day more accurate than tha cva.You can really tell the differace with a gun rest at the range. There is a reason you pay more. But im not knockling the c.v.a.

For a hunting trigger, mine had a light trigger that broke a lot like glass.
If it was any lighter, then it might not have been the ideal trigger for winter deer hunting while wearing gloves, at least not without being extremely careful.
It was a little bit muzzle light for a .50 compared to some other rifles that are made in both .50 & .54 with the same diameter barrel. In small part that's also due to it having a false muzzle designed to help with bullet alignment.
But that also makes it easier to carry and faster handling.
It has an ergonomic stock as well as an extra soft, recoil absorbing butt pad.
They're well built rifles that just happen to be economical too! :)

Update. You should have seen his face! The first question was "when can we shoot it"? His mother didn't even know until yesterday. One happy kid; he had to have pics taken of himself and I with the gun at port arms. I think it was a hit. Literally.

Good for you crowbeaner i am glad it was a hit. I got one from my wife last year for Christmas. I was hinting around that fall that i was thinking about getting back into muzelloader hunting after putting the old flint lock away many years ago. She picked it up at Walmart because she is always in and out of that place. I did not know what to think of the CVA, there is nothing bad that i can say about it. I put a old 4X Bushnell on it that i had laying around and have never looked back. I bagged 4 deer with it this year.

The missing word is "Yet"!

Yeah, but I'm not yet up to suffering the agonizingly long and painful discussion that Mrs. Grymster seems to require when I want to buy a gun.

Since grymmy lives out on the left coast, I doubt adoption will work. Too much red tape for any substantial reforms. Methinks that a few sessions of Mrs. Grymster going to Reloaders Anonymous might work though.

You folks have done nothing to help put a rifle under my Christmas tree, but you did put a smile on my grim mug. :)

I'm sure your boy's going to really enjoy his new rifle, crowbeaner... Keep us posted.
