I need help in finding year of manufacture of a Mossberg 500. I am getting ready to have it drilled and tapped (no it is not already drilled and tapped!) for scope base and mounts. There are two different bases, dependent on year of manufacture. I have already contacted Mossberg, but no replies. I though maybe somebody out there might already have a list and could look it up for me.

Serial Number is: J046254

Also, does somebody have any pics on how to shim barrel?

My 20 gauge 500 is J992XXX and was made in late 80's I reckon...

That is part of what I am trying to find out. All of the forums have been saying " for slug shooting, use beer can tin and shim the barrel to tighten it up"

Shim where and how? I dunno! I am currently in process of saving a Tornado Victim Mossy 500 that I picked up at LGS (Redoing stock, metal, etc.) and build it up as 24" slug gun with scope. If shimming helps, I'll do it as gun is going to be dedicated slug gun and barrel can stay on gun.

Pics would help if somebody could do that for me. It would be a good post to help others in future also.

Just got email back from Mossberg Customer Service. My 500 was manufactured in 1983. Mounts are in the mail!
