Well, it's over except for the extensions and late hunts. A good season for me as I got to get out with both my boys and both sons in law. In a 5 week season I fired 4 rounds from 3 different hunting rifles and have 4 clean kills to show for it. 2 mule deer does with my .243, a small mule deer buck with my 270 WSM, and yesterday a round from my 30.06 downed a cow elk.:D

Howd everyone else do?

Now we have to wait what feels like an eternity. How do you like the 270wsm? I ended this season short of a bear( they were everywhere two weeks before season opened) and the elk (a ton of them, but on private land:(

kametc. . .I'm pleased to hear of your good fortune. I'm heading up to your neck of the woods in the spring (Hamilton) for a ~4yr stay.

Meat in the freezer!

vetteracer92, I've had this 270 WSM for 3 years now. It's a nice rifle, and one of the last retail New Haven model 70's in Mt. Very light and accurate. An outstanding deer rifle but I have yet to have it knock an elk off it's feet. Thats why on Saturday I was shooting my .06 ( I can always go back to what works right?) Real high velocity bullets seem to skip right through an elk. They are dead but they don't know it. I'll get the right bullet found yet. I've so far tried 150gr nosler partitions (and may go back to these). Then a Hornady 150 gr SST interlock. I thought they might open up a little quicker. My next pick is a Hornady 150 gr interbond. The Swift A-frame would work for sure but at $1.00 a pop....ouch.
We ran into a bear on our last day over on the Shields river. It was a small bear...yearling and had a good dark cinnamon color. It stood there looking at us for about a minute at 40 yds. My buddy even had a tag but the block managment rules said....no bears.:(

Well if'n ya'll still got the itch, come on down to the "bikini state" and hunt some. Our "short season" was 11-27 to 11-30 reg gen gun starts 12-13.

For us this season, one muley doe with with .243 using Hornady 95 gr. SST, one muley doe with 7mm-08 using 139 gr. SST and one 4 x 3 bull elk with .270 140 gr. SST. All one shot, the first doe took only a few steps, the second doe was not as clean a kill but after 75 yards it was over and the bull took a twenty yard shot and fell over not taking another step.

First bull for myself, second deer for my son and first deer for my middle daughter. A successful season filling the freezer, but very tough hunting conditions. TOO WARM, thus the extended season.

Congratulations on your season.

Brent, tell me about Bikini wearin pigs. I've heard you've got good pig huntin down there. With Montana being devoid of pigs that might make a good excuse for a FL vacation:D......I'll see what the wife says.

.41 rem mag fan, Sounds like you had a good season too. Did you get that 140 Hornady SST back to look at or did it go through the elk.:)

First time I have ever found a bullet still in an animal. I have never really looked I must admit though..... The bullet entered just behind the right shoulder, hit a rib dead on and ended up in the "arm pit" in the left front quarter. Both lungs were hit. :)

The one I dug out of that small buck is simular. I hit him right on the point of the nose. The core exited the back of his neck right under the ears. I found just the boattail part of the jacket tumbling around in the rubble of his head. Of course what it hit was solid bone.:)

I got a small 3x4 mulie, probably would have passed on him, but it was 5 minutes into shooting light when I spotted him and only 300 yards from the road. So 1 shot at 120 yards to the neck from my .280 (140 grain Federal Fusion) and he fell over like a tree. Saw a few elk, but never got a shot...no worries though, I have meet in the freezer and another few weeks.

Had a short season this year, took a big cow 2nd day of bow season, then a wt doe later on with the hoyt. Missed out on finding the buck i got an arrow in, looked like a good hit, the blood just stopped after about 80 yards, looked till 1 am, and also 5 hours the next day. no luck..... WAS NOT HAPPY. was a great buck. ended up filling a 2nd doe tag with the 270. 130grain ballistic tip. 50 yard neck shot, she was looking right at me.... she went down pretty fast. Went after some mulie bucks i saw during bow season but had no luck, couldnt find either of the monsters, and the rest were just to small to shoot. So im eating my A tag when all my elk meat is gone!!!
