My dad gave me this old smith and wesson hand gun, and I cant find anything about it online. The numbers on the bottem of the handle are 31648, and the last diget is eather a 7 or f. If you have any info please let me know, thanks
this old gun i have is a double action revolver. on the top of the it says smith and wesson springfeild mass. and it has some dates undertheath that, but someone used it as a hammer so i cant read the dates on it. I think that the grips on it are plastic, and they are a light brown color. On the top of the grips it has a s&w. To load it the barrel breaks open from just in front of the hammer. The hammer is exposed. i cant put a pic on here yet but i should be able to in a day or two. thanx for the info

A picture well focused, would help, does it say Smith and wesson on it? does the cylinder swing out?, does it have an upper sideplate screw, and one in front of the trigger guard?
What caliber is marked on the barrel?

I'll add to what Master Blaster says...

1) Does the cylinder swing out to the left? If not, do you open it by tilting the barrel up (known as a tip-up), or by tilting the barrel down and the cylinder up (known as a top-break)?

2) What exactly does the caliber inscription on the barrel say? (Don't try to interpret it, please just write it verbatim.)

3) Does the gun actually have an intertwined "S&W" logo on the side? Any other marks? What do the grips look like- material, inscriptions, etc?

4) If the gun is a top-break, is it double-action (the hammer self-cocks when you pull the trigger) or single-action (the hammer must be manually thumb-cocked before firing)?

5) If it's a double-action top-break, does it have a visible hammer?

A picture is worth a thousand words. :D
