Hey, I know it's only a button-buck, but it's more meat in my freezer than I had when I left the house this morning.

Congrats. In my opinion, working for a deer is trophy enough.

Who cares about the horns - Iv'e tried boiling, broiling, crockpotting, baking, grilling and stewing horns and they always taste like a piece of bone!!!! I also hunt for the meat, but wont pass up a nice buck if one happens my way.

Way to go!
A deer is a deer if you like the meat.
I shot a doe at 1:10PM opening day as well. I seen 8 deer yesterday. All does and maybe a few button bucks, but none had antlers I could see. I decided to take the 8th one.

In Virginia does a button count as an "antlerless" or a buck?

In florida we can only shoot a deer that has a minimum of 4 inches of antler above the scalp during general gun.

More than I got. Yesterday was down pouring and warm (50's). Today was at least cold, but WAY WAY WAY too windy (20 mph winds, gusting to more). I saw 5 this morning about 75 yds away, but that was all I saw before I couldn't stop shivering and had to call it quits.

Good job! I'm jealous (and bummed), it doesn't look like I'll be hunting this year, and I even have the buck permit. :(

Camper - sounds like you need a dose of northern Wisconsin deer season to toughen you up.....snow, cold, and wind are a nice day (as long as the wind chill stays above -20F), otherwise, we have to get out our cold weather gear!

Thanks everybody. It feels good to have one out-o-the-way.

It counts as "antlerless". I found this out after I already called it in as antlered. No worries. I have more tags!

I shot a button buck with the muzzleloader, and spiked a fat doe with the bow. My kid and I hunted the southern zone this weekend and got drowned TWICE on Saturday, and frozen and snow covered yesterday. ANY deer is meat in the freezer, and I'm with kayakersteve; I've cooked horns every possible way and they are STILL tough to chew.

This is the 2nd Saturday in a row that I've gotten a deer! This one a doe. My Tikka T3 Hunter in .308 is certainly proving itself!

Congrats on the button buck. Today was the last day of shotgun here in Delaware and with 10 minutes left of daylight I also took a nice little button buck that looked just like yours.

fxdriver, GOOD job . Nothing wrong with buttons . The loin steaks will cut like a med. rare marshmellow. I harvested buttons years ago with a .44 revolver, & 1 with a 45/70 , both with my handloads.

Hey, I know it's only a button-buck
Good meat on that baby deer!
A guy in my camp shot one like that a couple years back, gutted him and left him hanging while he went and ate breakfast. When he returned, his prize was wearing a diaper with a baby bottle in its mouth.:D
