What powder is "H. Universal"?
On page 565 of the Speer manual #13 (in the 240 grain table for the 44 Rem Mag) it lists a powder simply as "H. Universal".
I googled it and found nothing. So, if anyone knows, please let me know.
I'm guessing it means Universal Clays, but don't really know for sure.

Good guess. Hodgdon Universal.

Probably Universal Clays. Go to the Hodgdon site and check their load data against the Speers.

robctwo,
I did. Hodgdon shows 10.2 gr Of their Universal producing 1246 fps.
Speer shows 9.6 gr of "H. Universal" producing 1237, and that's max.
So, I'm still in the dark.
Maybe I can contact Speer and see what they say.

Assuming Speer and Hodgdon where using the same bullet, the same case and primer and the same powder lots, they may use different test barrels and pressure test equipment.
I would work up from 8.9 gr. of Hodgdon's Universal.

G'day, I'm not sure if this is relevant. Last week I asked the Australian powder manufacturer ADI a question about identifying their various powders. (I will post a new thread soon on the subject.) In short, their AP70N powder is sold in the USA by HODGDON under the label 'Universal'. Still not sure if this will help.

I like & use Hodgdon Universal 'Clays' in several handguns. It is in the same realm as the well know Unique & supposed to be cleaner. I do find it clean. I have noticed some charges from Hodgdon to be on the high side compared to various manuals. I usually x-reference several manuals before I start loading.

btefft,
Hogdon makes both powders spoken about in this topic.
There is "Universal Clays" which I use for my 12ga trap loads and "Universal" which I use in my light target/plinking loads for my 44 Mag. They are two different powders and cannot be used in place of each other.

I heard that Hodgdon planned to drop the "Clays" suffix from their International Clays and Universal Clays powders to keep them distinct from Hodgdon Clays, yet a third powder that is faster than either of the other two. I don't see that on JibJab's link, though.
