I have been given a Smith & Wesson pistol and would like to know it's age. It's a double action with a 6 inch barrel, 5 shot, top break. Checked the serial number and the same number is on the butt, under the hard rubber grip and on the cylinder. Serial number 475644. Any help you can give on this pistol would be greatly apprerciated.
Looked in third edition of Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. All I could find was .38 Double Action dated 1895-1909 4th with numbers 322701-539000.
have my doubts on that though.

Why would you doubt the experts in a researched standard reference work ?

A ".38 Double Action" is exactly what it should be.

What puts doubt in your mind ?
