View Full Version : Spare Cylinder carrier

I am looking for a leather carrier for extra pre loaded cylinders for a .44 New Army BP revolver. You know, like the set up used by Clint Eastwood in the Pale Rider movie. Also, is there any info supporting the use of such by either side during the Civil War?

I don't know if that was a really common practice back in the day but from my experience with cap and ball guns it's only possible for your first two or three cylinders, after that the powder fouling makes it pretty difficult to pull the base pin out to swap cylinders depending on how tight the fit is on your particular gun. Pyrodex doesn't seem to build up quite as fast. Keeping the base pin well lubed helps. Make sure to use either a good tight wad or grease over the the ball because if you get a chain fire it can be real exciting until it's over. I think changing cylinders fast is more of a Hollywood effect than anything else. Cap and ball revolvers are a blast to shoot. Modern guns don't give you that BOOM. Have fun.
