i have seen the NEF for 90$ new at walmart
they use to sell them for 50$ 10 years ago at k-mart
i almost bought one when i bought a remington870 for 200$
i was home on leave and just had to buy a 12ga
recoil is rough on single shots
looks like you have an aftermarket buttpad

AFAIK it's factory original. It has H&R engraved on the back of that pad. But I don't know much about these guns.

If you enjoy it, and can shoot it, that's all that count's. I've often thought one would be the perfect field-gun. I'm afraid to take my SxS doubles outdoors any longer, since they've gotten so expensive. That H&R Topper looks like just the ticket! Have fun with it! :)

It's a very good gun and well worth the $80 you paid for it.

A friend of mine told me these were in the 100-150 dollar price range. I don't believe him, especially because of the price I paid. Is this true? Or am I right>?

i paid about $115 for a new one a couple years ago. i love it! its solid and i think you will like it a lot. its a great gun for hunting, light weight, very easy to carry broken open.. extremely safe... can double as a club :)
i can't say enough good about it, it is the cheapest gun i own and my favorite, the simplicity is great. also mine has some type of safety device that if one was cocking the hammer and slipped and it fell forward...even if the hammer was 99% of the way back when it slipped, it still wouldnt fire. obviously not something to try except in a safe direction! but its good to know its there.

It's a good starter gun. My daughter has one in .20 gauge and black wood. She says it kicks a little hard, but over time she'll get used to it.

I had an old Ithaca that looked just like that one. One precaution, my Ithaca kicked like 2 mules stung by a bee. Worst recoil of any gun I ever shot.

I grew up on a 20ga Topper. Good little guns. I would use them on any thing you can kill with a shotgun. With that simple $80 outlay, you are geared up for any animal in North America, as long as you get close enough.

I have the same gun, and when I go bird hunting, I almost perfer it over some of my other shotguns do to light weight, and with the price, if I get into some thicker brush, I don't freak out about possible scratches on the stock and barrel. As everyone else has said, it does have a heck of a kick, though...
