Ive have found a couple differences and wanted to know if it was worth dropping the extra pennies on it. The first 590 was just plain with the speed loader stock. The one I want to know if it is worth it is the 590 with the heavy walled barrel, id be dropping another 40 bucks to get the same set up but just a heavy walled barrel.
Id like to know the differences and if this is something i should get for my home defense gun.

Without knowing the specific model numbers it is hard to advise you. The models with the heavy barrel are usually model number 51663 or 51668(speedfeed), both model 590A1s. the 590 Special purpose are without the heavy barrel. The other differences are that the 590A1, in addition to a heavy barrel have metal trigger assemblies and metal safety buttons, both very worth the extra $40-50. I have both, love both and they both shoot great. I personally don't like the speedfeed stocks. I replaced both mine with Knoxx Comp-Stocks

I don't like the speedfeed stocks with shell storage and I don't like the looks of the Knoxx stocks.

You don't need the heavy wall bbl because it adds a lot of weight but the metal trigger guard and safety is nice and well worth the extra cost. The 590A1 shotgun with heavy bbl is the only way to get the metal guard & safety.

I find the 590a1 with 20 inch barrel is too muzzle heavy. However, the 18.5 inch A1 is a very solid and handy gun.

The 18.5' bbl 590A1 would be a good choice.

Here is a 590A1 18.5" bbl Speedfeed stock with one of my +2 mag tube extensions, 7+1 capacity.

as a factory item yes. I bought from Brownells, ($55), the mossberg metal trigger assembly and plopped it in my 590SP myself. I also replaced the plastic safety with a Vang unit that is nice. My 51668 came with the metal stuff and heavy barrel and I added the comp-stock. The SP, (50665) I added the metal trigger and Vang safety, and a comp-stock. I don't like the spec=ops Knoxx stocks either but the Comp-Stock looks more like a conventional stock. I don't like the speedfeed stocks either.
