View Full Version : Darn 8 shot revolvers. Not again! New 627 4" heavy barrel. Don't need, but......

Long story short, last year (April) I bought a Taurus 608 8 Shot .357mag 4". Shot about 2000+ rounds through it, mostly .357 and have really liked it, but was ready to move up to a S&W 8 shot .357. I found a used older 627 but thought it looked old fashion and dated. It didn't really appeal to me.

So after some research, I found out about the S&W 327 "M&P".357mag 8 shot Scandium Aluminum (35oz) from S&W PC, and fell in love that gun. It was the modern tactical look of it. So I saved my pennies and ordered one.

The day after I bought the Model 327 (12-?-07), I found out about the S&W 627 V-Comp S.S. (47oz) .357mag 8 shot with a removable compensator. "Ohhh man that is the most awsome .357 I have ever seen!!!!" And, it's a PC gun! "Why didn't I get that one". But I was still happy the 327.

Finally after himming and hawing for a month or so, around February of 08, I tried to find one. I found a guy that was taking orders with no idea, and no promises on when, if ever, he'll get them, but guessed in about march or April of 08. So I had time to get the cash (Don't ask. LOL).

Back at the end of May of 08, after patiently waiting, I decided to call the dealer. Short story longer.......

He didn't have a clue of when, or if I'd ever he would see them coming in because they now offer the same gun but in "Two Tone" instead of all S.S., but, he had it in stock! So after thinking I'd never get one unless I jump on the not as pretty as the S.S. one. I ordered it, hoping it was better looking in person. But I'm into shooting, and I don't need the S.S. finish, I buy guns to shoot, and not just look at, but that S.S. V-Comp, it was so darn pretty, and the "Two Tone" is OK, but.........

So I got it 3-4 weeks ago, and it was a nice looking gun in person. A little front heavy but what a shooter (Holes in holes at 7-10 yards free hand), with just the most awesome trigger DA or SA. WOW!!!!

OK, I'm now happy, but wait! What is this (today 6-22-08)? I discover the new S&W 627 8 .357mag shot with a cool looking 4" heavy barrel. Ohhh, my, God! What an awesome looking gun, and for about half the price of a S&W PC gun. Obviously it's a regular S&W factory gun, but damn, that is a must have.

If I get that, what's next, the mental institution? I'm going crazy. I don't need any more revolvers! But. but, I want the new (As of January of 08 release) 627 with RRWO sites, and that's the icing on the cake.

Thank for listening me going bonkers, it's all S&W's fault.

PS, the Taurus 608. I sold that to my brother, but I still repect that gun as a top knotch shooter and it's a nice quality gun.

PS, PS, I also like the new 386 Night Guard

Looks like you are a sucker for gadgets. S&W has plenty of bait and will keep you on their hook.

No help for you here. I've been drooling over the 327 PD myself.
Its a PC gun also.
Is the trigger that much better? I've wanted to know that.

So Elvishead, do you really prefer the 627 now over your 327? If so, why?

Which would you keep if you could only have one??

The 627 specs look like it is pretty heavy to me. I don't know if I could go for a gun quite that heavy, but I sure admit that it is indeed gorgeous to view.

Have you not heard about the new competition S&W M&P Pro 9? A few people have recently been able to get these new guns, although Bud's got some in this last Friday, and was sold out by the end of the weekend. It has a longer 5 inch barrel, improved sights, and also a much improved trigger over the standard M&P. With it, you could increase your firepower from 8 to 17+1 !!

Winchester's Ranger T +P+ 127 gr 9mm loaded was chronographed in the new Pro 9, and it produced 1,323 fps, giving 496 ft lbs of energy!! While not up to .357 mag levels, that is most impressive for a 9mm.

With the slab sided 5" barrel and tapered shroud? That look is only about 11 years old. But it's not the look that matters anyway to me. "Eight times" .357 does.

This is a bargain - same price as the 686SSR - $719 at my pusher's - new, of course - behold the 627 Pro - and my older JM PC627 V-Comp. The older guy had a PC shop trigger from '01-'02 - great. My new one got a full strength Wolff hammer - and reduced trigger return - really nice, but not as good as the older trigger.

I did move the fg Ahrends cocobolo square conversion grips from the old 627 to the new 627 Pro - and a new Jerry Miculek grip on the older one. I love that feel! Great grab.

And then there is that other new little Baby S&W .357 Pro model, the Model 60 Pro:

There are just too many of these Smith and Wesson Pro and Performance Center guns to keep track of. And which one to buy???

The grips on this Model 60 Pro sure do look nice.

Love the M327 M&P. With the Polygonal rifling, it's a really nice shooting gun. After a few tweaks with the site's, it's a holes in holes shooter. Recoil is very manageable although it's an Aluminum framed gun.

Trigger, is nice DA and really nice SA. The 627 has a better DA, but the 327 has a better SA. Go figure.

I do like shooting the 627 more because it's just an easier gun to get good groups at any distance to 50 yards so far. And the 627 has less recoil do to the weight, and having the Comp. help to.

TBS, the 327 would be a much better all around handgun being lighter, having a shorter barrel and you can utilize the rails on the barrel and top frame.

So that's hard to answer. The reason I wrote thread, is because if I had the new 627 4". I wouldn't feel the need for either of the latter two.

I haven't heard of the S&W M&P Pro 9. But I own a CZ75B 16+1, that's good enough for me right now. That too is a fairly heavy gun.

Yep, that's the point of this thread.

I guess, I'll keep both the 27's, but man, if I had that newer 627 4", I'm sure I wouldn't own the other two. And I'd have $1500-2000 still in my pocket.

Sounds like you had excellent service out of all the eight shot revolvers you bought.

One from Taurus no less.

Sounds great.

What is the favorite you shoot now?

I don't recall having one single problem with the Taurus 608. On the other hand, both smith's have had misfire's do to a light hammer strike's. I found out the problem, and made the necessary adjustments, I hope. So, I had the best experience with the Taurus so far, but by fare I like my new 627 V-Comp for shooting, but only by a little. All three guns are "GREAT" shooters. The 627 being the best, with the best trigger too.

What kind of failures did you have with your Smith's? Was it ammo related?

What kind of failures did you have with your Smith's?

The hammer spring backed out, and it was striking light on the harder caps resulting in misfires. Once readjusted it been fine.

Was it ammo related?

Yes, and no. Some ammo like S&B would fire, but the Magtech wouldn't.
