View Full Version : Help needed...refinishing a badly pitted shotgun barrel
April 9, 2008, 10:34 PM
I have a H&R 20 ga single shot topper model. It was in a flooded basement in it's case and forgotten. A year or so later is was remembered but the blueing was badly damaged rusted. I have cleaned the rust off but the surface is pitted and damaged. What I'd like to do is just coat the barrel with something to make it look better. The surface is too damaged to make it look good with just blueing
What are my options? ...without spending a lot of money.

I'd sand it to get as much pitting as possible smoothed out then use one of the bake-on polymer/paint/wonder-finishes. Lauer makes a filler compound for pitting and gashes.

I'm a very deliberate man, I would make sure that 350 degrees was not enough heat to draw down the heat treat hardness of that skinny walled scattergun barrel.
I have used these products successfully on small parts, and maybe ever a pistol frame. please be careful and do some checking.
Try not to do this work in your kitchen stove if you have a mate, she will not like the odor left in the oven.
Good Luck & Be Safe
