I have an early 40's Lyman Alaskan that needs some TLC. Optics are clear, but the scope body finish is very worn. I've tried Oxpho Blue with no success. Is the Alaskan tube made of aluminum?

As far as I know they are steel.

These folks can refinish them, but you have to call for a price. The listed prices are for rebuilds, not refinishes.

I just saw one in the box that had never been mounted on a gun sell on an on-line auction for $550.

Thanks for the response. I'm familiar with that outfit, but want to keep this project confined to my garage.

Progress report. Tried some Brownell's Allumininum Black and it took to the tube like fish to water. Go figure.
