i see an item that attaches a digital camera to a spotting scope to take long distance wildlife pictures. does anyone have any experience with this type of device? thanks.

It depends on the quality of the original front end optics in the spotting scope how well this works.
Attaching the digicam is easy, just bolt on, trim for focus setting at infinity & set the auto/program controls to shutter priority.
Most scopes, even high quality ones, are optically poor compared to camera lenses so you'll probably have soft, low contrast results.
