At long last I've come back into possession of a nice Colt Detective Special (1961 vintage). It's in excellent condition and I'm hoping it will prove reliable and accurate to become my daily CCW.

Handloads for it will start with the 173 gr. Keith and 4.5 gr. Unique. I also like the FBI load, 158 gr. HP SWC, as a .38 Special carry factory load, but it's +P and I'm just not going to fire +P in this nice little revolver. If anyone has a favorite standard pressure .\38 Special load I'd appreciate knowing about it.

That is an awesome piece and should serve you well.

I hope it carries in reality as well as it does in theory. :)

My CCW holy grail is a J-frame to K-frame sized snubby in 44special or 45ACP. Still on a quest for that one...

-----------------------
ARTHUR: Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred quest. If he will give us food and shelter for the night, he can join us in our quest for the Holy Grail.
FRENCH GUARD: Well, I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen. Uh, he's already got one, you see.
ARTHUR: What?
GALAHAD: He says they've already got one!
ARTHUR: Are you sure he's got one?
FRENCH GUARD: Oh, yes. It's very nice-a. (I told him we already got one.)
FRENCH GUARDS: [chuckling]

Thanks for the well wishes. I have great expetations for the Colt Dick Special. I ordered a Desantis pocket holster for it this morning.

I'd certainly like a J or K framed .44 Special, too; if anyone only made one. I recently carried a .44 Sp. Charter Arms Bulldog (for about a year) which is just about the size and weight of the Detective Special. I've carried J framed Smiths, too. I did look fairly hard for an L framed Smith .44 Sp. 5 shooter, but never got lucky enough to cop one.

I've narrowed down my CCW to a lightweight pocket revolver and have always thought that the Colt Dick Special would be hard to beat. Just ask Joe Friday.

IIRC Joe Friday carried an S&W M&P 2"-at least in the 1950s series. Recall
having a plastic one as a kid, "someday" I will get a real one. I have a DS Old
Model and a DS 72, I see you also prefer the Feel of Steel.

I have Detective Special from close to your early sixties-year. Great gun, easy to shoot, to be accurate while shooting fast etc. Great gun!

As for ammo question: I use two standard .38s from Buffalo Bore. Go to site and take a look. One is very soft lead bullet that spreads on impact (something hollow points may not in a 2" .38 special snub) and the other is hardened wadcutter that is also supposedly quite good for SD: it keeps its shape while going in sideways, like the flat side of a manhole cover. Both are around 840 fps.

Thanks for the info about the Buffalo Bore loads. I'm going to order a few boxes of those soft SWC 158s. That's looks exactly what I have in mind for this cool little .38.

I got my Desantas Neminis pocket holster for the Dick Special in today. It's great except for the butt of the revolver just being visable. Maybe I just need to break it in a bit; round the bottom edges over so it fits lower in the pocket.

I've got my 173 gr. Keith SWCs cast up and Unique is in the powder measure. This weekend I plan on putting 100 rounds through it to see what I can do with the little puppy.
