Actually, the second, if that's what it was, looks to have gone straight up.
It isn't nice to do that to an inexperienced shooter, by the way.

At least, unlike most YouTube videos, the shooter was wearing some eye protection. It's this kind of garbage that scares people away from shooting sports. Like to smack those guys silly!

I'm not quite sure how you double tap a revolver by accident. Maybe she fired, let go and almost dropped it, then grabbed it again with her finger on the trigger. Noobies can do some crazy things. Definitely not a nice thing to do.

I read and article about the .500 when it first came out there was complaints of consumers double tapping. They kept complaining to Smith and Wesson that the X-frames where faulty. What the article said was happening was, because of the recoil (usual really big bores where single action .475’s and .500’s until the .500 Smith) the trigger finger was letting go of the trigger during recoil. When the initial recoil pulse was through, the person unconsciously pulled the trigger again to have the trigger back where it naturally position should be.

Wonder if they'd been laughing and joking about it if she got hurt? It's idiots like this and the inexperienced that can really put a black mark on all gun owners.

That is very scary. Every now and then you hear about someone getting killed by something just like this.

Are you sure she double tapped? I perceived it as one shot.

:eek:Looked like one shot to me too. All of us ought to go find those turkeys and beat some sense into them. Geez - what a bunch of boneheads! Must have been one of those over-powered hand cannons.

One shot. If it were two, there would be a double flipping action as the other round went off.

I think you hear the echo. A supersonic echo!

I still think there are two. The first one make the muzzle rise and the second one sends the muzzle down fast, two fast for her to just be pulling the gun down. I hear two and see two.

I've seen this with several shooters and those big guns. I think that's two shots.
I know I saw one on our local range that I thought was only one, and was amazed when it turned out he had fired twice.

January 30, 2008, 03:37 AM
I agree, just one shot with an echo. I doubt she would have held on if a second round had fired. Sadly I know a few new shooters who asked to shoot the big gun even when warned about the recoil. No way to know what really happened to get the pistol in her hand.

I say one shot since the recoil of the other shot would have flipped the gun back. I don't think she would have the strength to hold the gun steady and negate the recoil, especially after seeing how she handles the recoil of the first round.

Looks like two rounds to me. Second going straight up.

I sure don't hear a second shot. It just looks like smoke from the first shot when the barrel is vertical.
But then again, I listened to loud metal music in high school, so my hearing may not be as sharp as others.

I guess it depends on your computer. I definatly hear two shots and the series of pictures show the smoke trail of the shot going straight up.

Looks like two to me, or you wouldn't be seeing the puff when the gun was straight up.

For a shot to have gone off straight up in the air, they sure were calm. Then again, they don't come across as Rhodes Scholars to me...
It still just looks like smoke from the first shot. It flipped fast enough. And if she fired again with it straight up, wouldn't the gun have flipped even more, behind her?

I sent them a message asking how many shots fired. He aswered back.
It was two shots, he said thanks to her tight grip and the dumb butt holding her forward.
It was a 44 Magnum.

Here is another one,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFJjaj7pXsA&feature=related
I was talking to a 4991/2 lbs Gaaloot today and he was telling me about his X frame .500. He said it happened to him(doubled) he couldn't believe it, but there were 2 spent cases in the cylinder. It works much like a Bump Fire.
Unless someone has fired a gun like this he will only put(allow) one cartridge in it.
And that goes for anyone that wants to try one handing one of the big ones.

I've doubled a .500 S&W and saw another do the same within minutes.

IMHO:
One shot, one echo, a lot of smoke continuing to exit the barrel under recoil. If the first shot, under proper hold caused it to flip so violently in her otherwise weak grip, I doubt she could have held onto the gun at all during a subsequent shot with it twisted and pointing straight up (or down) in her outstretched hand.
I am amazed at how the existence of Youtube has people convinced that they need to be seen by the world being stupid.

Its definately one shot, if she had fired the second it would have gone through her hand and the gun would have gone off into outer space.
Please folks don't do this to an inexperienced shooter, start them off with a light recoiling gun like a .22lr until they learn safety rules, muzzle and trigger control, and sight picture, then move to a centerfire. We want to convert new shooters to our sport not injure or scare them off.
When you do move them up to center fire LOAD ONLY ONE ROUND the firts couple times till they get a feel for it and you are sure they can keep the gun under control.

Double tap. You can see in the third pic that hksig posted that the gun is recoiling downward. Happens when the recoil is not absorbed by the elbows and/or shoulders. If the elbows are locked and a "friend" is pushing forward on the shoulders, the revolver has no place to go after initial recoil but forward. More or less rebounding forward into the trigger finger that is still in "squeeze" mode.

That is weird. I hear two shots on the original, but one shot on the slow motion replay. I'm pretty sure she fired the first shot single action. The light trigger startled her, then the gun bounced around in her hand enough to reset the trigger just as she reacted by grabbing it with a death grip with her finger still in the trigger guard. She is lucky no one got hurt and unlucky to have such jackass "friends".

I watched it several times and only perceived one shot. However the OP said he contacted the video maker who said it was two shots. As far as I can tell, that ends the debate. :)
