View Full Version : Shot in a slug gun

theres a slug gun for sale at the local gun shop, its pretty cheap and i want to buy it but im wondering will shooting shot out of a rifled barrel mess it up?

You'll get varied opinions on whether it will mess it up. Keep in mind though that the shot is lead and the barrel is steel. Lead = softer than steel.

The trouble comes when you find out how badly a rifled barrel shoots shot. You get ring shaped patterns because the shot column is spinning when it leaves the barrel.

If you want the versatility for either or, look at smoothbore slug barrels. They do OK with larger shot sizes to 25 yds or so and they'll shoot rifled slugs pretty good to 75-100 yds. Or if it's a Rem 870 or Mossberg 500/835 you can always get a second barrel for it.

If it's a good price, go for it. If you're worried about the actual rifling, it will take many many rounds to round it out. Shoot it and enjoy it :).
