I remember a few months back I asked what the "new" M16's with short barrels were being called since the 14.5" barreled version was called the "M4". A few fella's chimed in that the short 11.5" version was called just that: the "11.5" M4. Made sense to me. The reason I asked is because I didn't know.

Well after a little websearching I finially found the official name for the Shorties: What used to be called the Colt XM-177E1 nicknamed the CAR15. Now these guns are called the "M16A4 Commando" Cool eh? After all these years they still carry the "M16" name. These are the guns being carried by so many law enforcent officers today.

Just thought I'd share.:)

evolved into the M3, so the M4 is the logical continuation of the Carbine ID.

The CQB-W used by the navy is referred to as a Mk 18 mod 0.

I have never heard that designation used for any AR/m16 STLRN, Thanks!
